When I think of what cause and effect means the first thing that comes to mind is what you put out comes back to you. That makes me think of a boomerang. When you throw it out it will come back from the opposite direction and the equal distance.
The scriptures say it this way, that which ye sow, so shall ye also reap.
Since we’re referring to a scripture, I would like to relate cause and effect to the specific spiritual law of tithing. We believe when we give back to the Lord by paying our tithes, we can expect to receive blessings. I know one time I was standing at the stove cooking. I had pulled a glass casserole dish out of the cupboard and put it on the stove to get ready to put what I was stirring in the dish (not realizing that the unit had been left on low where I sat the dish). All of a sudden, the casserole dish made a loud pop sound and exploded! I screamed, it scared me so badly! My son-in-law came running in to see what had happened and there was glass clear across the room! It was everywhere! It had burned holes in the linoleum floor behind me! The miracle was that I did not have a single scratch or burn on me anywhere. It simply did not touch me at all! As I was bearing testimony of this, I received a witness that this was a direct result of paying my tithing! I like this illustration of cause and effect because my action of paying tithing is the cause, but the Lord is in charge of the how, and when, and what for the effect.
Deepak Chopra also calls it the law of Karma. Another thing he says is “you must become consciously aware that your future is generated by the choices you are making in every moment of your life”. We know when we make a choice, we must accept the consequences of that choice. I have heard the saying “when you pick up one end of a stick, you also pick up the other.” The most basic example would be if you choose not to put your coat on when you go outside and it is 30° outside, the natural consequence would be, you will be very cold.
If we go along unconscious of the choices we are making, then we are being run by our subconscious programs. We can change the outcome by changing our choice.
Another story I think shows perfectly the law of cause and effect I would like to share is, I have a son that ended up getting a divorce 3 years ago and has been in a very desperate time. He has been staying with us to get his feet back on the ground. At one point he needed a lot of extra money for a test he needed to take. He was so discouraged and couldn’t see any way to make it happen. I came up with a plan to make “taco braids” to sell and earn the money. We worked together and made it happen. We earned the money and, of course I taught him the principle of paying tithing on the money we earned. Well, fast forward down the road when I decided to once again make “taco braids” to earn the money I desired for my Phase 2 goal to provide a great Christmas party for the family. I went to the store to buy the ingredients I needed and didn’t have enough money to get what I needed. I came home discouraged and in tears. When my son found out he came to me and said, “Mom, you helped me when I needed it, now let me help you”! He helped me get some of the ingredients to get me started. What I put out did indeed come back to me!
