Stinkin’ Thinkin’

By Beckie Dragon

I want to help you, dear reader, to overcome the challenge of thinking negatively and not believing anything good can come into your life. I know you are afraid to dream for, you see, I was there once myself.

When I first heard about dreaming, visualizing and setting goals to obtain things that I want, it was completely foreign to me. I didn’t allow myself to dream because I didn’t dare. I didn’t believe I could have it anyway. Growing up, I had always heard “make it do or do without.” It didn’t seem right to want something frivolous. It actually felt irresponsible. I came to believe life was meant to be hard. In order to be responsible, I needed to be doing something to take care of my home, family, or church responsibilities at all times. I felt guilty if I did anything for fun.

I was born prematurely and weighed only two pounds. I was left alone in an incubator and, even that young, I allowed the bad angels to convince me that I was too small and helpless to amount to anything on my own. But they convinced me they would stay with me and help me. I thought that sounded like a good plan. As I grew up, I would hear in my mind “other people can do that, but you can’t.” Therefore, I determined that I wasn’t big enough, smart enough, or capable enough.

You need to know that we all have been given gifts and talents. But also know that is where the minions will attack. They will tell you lies to convince you that the opposite is true.  For example, two of my strengths are knowledge and wisdom, but the minions would tell me things to make me feel stupid and incapable.

If you have struggled with any of these thoughts or feelings, I want you to know you can turn it around. The first thing you need to do is expose the lies. Lies are anything that make you feel bad about yourself. What are the ways those lies are pulling you down and keeping you from growing and achieving in your life? What is the price you are paying to keep that belief? Ask yourself, is that what my Maker wants me to believe, or how He wants me to feel about myself? Or is it what the adversary wants me to believe and feel about myself? Writing all of the negative thoughts down on paper is how you expose the lies. Now take another piece of paper and write the positive thoughts plus one other positive thing down. Now, burn, shred or destroy in some way the negative list of lies. Then take the positive list and those are your daily affirmations and declarations! Declare the truth every day out loud! This is also where the Stickman comes into play. When those negative thoughts come (AND THEY WILL), picture the conscious mind kicking out the negative thoughts. Say and picture the positive affirmation going into the subconscious mind and heart to stay.

When you slip back into the old thinking patterns, or “stinkin’ thinkin’,” this is known as deductive reasoning, which is saying, “It’s never happened for me before, so it can’t happen for me now.” Remember that this is the bondage cycle. When the triggers come up, choose inductive reasoning instead, which is saying, “If good things can happen to anybody, then they can happen to me.”

Make sure you take your problem to the Lord. We are given weaknesses to help us turn to Him. Ether 12:27 says, “And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.” Another scripture that helps me to remember is Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” It is good to remember that left alone, we are weak, but with God all things are possible. He is patient and kind, He loves us, and wants to help us. He cannot if we don’t ask.

Just know, our God-given right is to dream and to learn to create. We are meant to be literal co-creators with God. Just think what you can create together. Recognize He wants you to dream, to be happy and fulfilled. Ask Him if what you want is right and good, and when you feel it is in your heart, know that He will be your partner to create it. Choose to believe and dream!
