The Law of Perpetual Transmutation is a universal law wherein things and circumstances are continually coming and going from a non-existent state to a physical, temporal state. Perpetual is defined as continual or never-ending. Transmutation means changing from one form to another. The scriptures teach, and I believe, that all things are created spiritually before they are physically (see Moses 3:4-5).
This doctrine is the foundation of this universal law. For example, when we engage in thinking, things are being created from a non-existent state to an idea. We become co-creators with God when we are using the gift of thought. If we choose to doubt, or we fear what may become of it, then the process reverses and the thing which we are seeking after will be repelled from us.
But when we nurture those thoughts with a positive attitude, and act in faith, our ideas eventually materialize and our goals are realized. As we are obedient to this law, the things and circumstances we seek after are attracted to us, thus allowing our faith to grow.
There are some main ingredients to producing what you want; the first is faith-faith in God that He will bless you with your righteous desires; faith in yourself and what you can become; and faith in this law, that when you are obedient to it, you will attract those things you want. Faith is defined as “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen” (Hebrews 11:1).
As you practice even a particle of faith in this principle, allowing yourself to believe and hope in its reality, you will learn that what you are after is good. If you pray about it, nourish it, and allow it to grow within you spiritually, the things and circumstances you seek will be drawing to you; and you can almost taste what is spiritually being produced. When those circumstances and things have been attracted spiritually, they will transmute into a physical, tangible thing, and you will be able to partake of the fruits of your faith.
Secondly, take action. Those things and circumstances will be attracted to you even greater if you are anxiously engaged, moving your feet, and preparing yourself to receive.
Finally, have gratitude now. Brigham Young said, “I do not know of any, excepting the unpardonable sin, which is greater than the sin of ingratitude” (Discourses of Brigham Young, selected by John A. Widtsoe, 1941, p.228). Show real gratitude for what you have now and what you hope to receive. I have learned that real, genuine gratitude is the key emotion. When we show this type of gratitude, I believe we are showing how prepared we are to receive.
Not too long ago, I was taken ill. I wasn’t able to work and the bills were stacking up. We had taken another family in to live with us and had 4 extra mouths to feed. As the end of the month drew nearer, we didn’t have enough money to pay our mortgage. Thankfully, I had been a part of the Mentor Training program and had learned these laws and principles.
If this had happened a year ago, I would have acted totally different, and it would have been a much more difficult trial. But, being aware of these laws, I found that, instead of having feelings of panic or discouragement, I had a renewed hope and vigor that God would provide because I had been prepared. We had given our all; and we knew something good was to come of this. I held on to the idea that we would be able to meet our financial obligations. We put forth a positive, grateful attitude and continued in thanksgiving daily.
I was getting sicker and sicker, and the worse it became, the more I practiced faith and could feel things taking a spiritual form. My understanding was enlightened and the things we needed were coming to us. About a week before we had to pay our mortgage, my wife’s mom sent us $100 and my wife’s sister sent $100. We were in the depths of gratitude because we were able to buy food and diapers with that; yet we were still short some $200 for our mortgage. However, we did not worry; we knew that even more resources were coming.
Then two days before our mortgage was due, my wife’s sister sent another $300; she said it was some extra money she had acquired. She didn’t know our financial situation; but the circumstance presented itself that she obtained some money, and she felt like we needed it. Our joy was full and our gratitude was great. Our faith in God increased, and our faith in this law grew.
I am truly grateful to know this law; it has helped me conquer doubt and fear, using faith, hope, and gratitude.
