Barbies and Prayers

By Shelly Webb

The Law of Cause and Effect states: Action and reaction are equal, in opposite directions.  Focus on what you can give, not what you will get.  I lived in Castle Rock, Colorado for exactly one year.  We moved there as a family in late December 2017, and I moved back home to Utah, with my children, in late December 2018.  From June 2018 through November 2018, my then husband and I were going through a divorce, but still living in the same house.  It was a crazy difficult time.  Looking back, I sometimes don’t know how I survived.  We had to pack up our house twice in about a year, but the second time, my former husband was staying behind, so we didn’t have to bring everything.  I really didn’t want to bring much because I knew we were going to be living in tight quarters for a while when we got back to Utah.  I started to think about how I could downsize our belongings.

I have six girls, so we had accumulated a lot of girl toys over the years.  My youngest daughter was eight, and they didn’t play with many of their toys anymore, so I decided to offer them for free on our church Facebook page.  We had a huge amount of My Little Ponies, Polly Pockets, Littlest Pet Shops, Strawberry Shortcakes, and Barbies.  I posted the toys, and people started to come to pick them up.  It was nice to know they were going to get played with again.  I believe the Barbies were the last to go, and we definitely had a lot of Barbies and Barbie supplies.  The lady who came to pick up the Barbies was very friendly and talkative and asked me all about my situation and why I was giving all our toys away.  I told her I was in the middle of a divorce, and my children and I were moving back to Utah.  I didn’t tell her anything about our financial situation, which was very bad at the time.  I was having trouble taking cases for my work because I was so busy, and I had very little daycare for my two year old;  meanwhile, my husband had removed me from our joint account, so it was difficult to get the things I needed.  I was definitely struggling.  The lady left with the Barbies, and a minute or two later I heard someone knock on the door.  When I went to open it, she was back.  She handed me a $100 bill, and said she just really wanted to pay me for the Barbies.  I had no expectation of receiving anything, but my acts of giving were repaid by the receipt of a monetary blessing that I really needed at the time.
