The Law of Gestation states that everything has a gestation period during which it develops. A good example is an expectant mother. In her womb, the baby for nine months, the creation process, and the experience of any transition also has a period of gestation. I recall being pregnant; initially, the excitement of my expectation was a feeling like no other.
However, the closer I came to the due date, the more I came to understand the importance of patience. Patience during gestation may be difficult, but it is required. This applies to any stage of life, endeavor, or goal. Whether you take on a new career, relationship, or fitness regiment, patience is key. Rushing the process can ruin the outcome you have imagined and impact the personal development you will obtain by holding yourself accountable to what you are committed to and maintaining confidence it will happen even when you can’t see it yet.
One of my favorite scriptures on this topic can be found in Galatians 1:6, “And let us not be weary in well-doing; for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” When we understand that it is universal law that each transformation we desire requires a period of gestation, we can embrace the part of the process that is only visible within us, the same way our essential development took place in the womb.
Honoring the Process
In the book Hidden Treasures, Leslie Householder says, “our ideas will never come faster than the time they take to mature.” Traditional cultures commemorate personal and spiritual transitions with long periods of reflection and focusing on the shifts that occur in our maturity. These rites of passage not only celebrate our development, they help us learn how to let go of the old and fill us with meaning during life transitions. Western society tends to skip over the inward part, generally only recognizing the outward transformation that takes place. It’s important to acknowledge that gestation is a fundamental part of every rite of passage because these transformation processes take you on a journey into the unknown. While you are there, you transform into someone new. Sometimes these rites of passage are so subtle that we don’t even realize we are in one until a shift occurs, and you realize that you didn’t respond the way you would have in the past.
Your Ideas Have A Gestation Period
Your ideas have gestation periods. This refers to the length of time it takes for an idea to move from inception into physical form. Every goal you have has an endpoint stretching out to some estimated date in the future. You have no idea how long it will take to move your goal into physical form. All you have to work with is your ability to take into consideration the amount of work that needs to take place to realize your goal. When you consider the level of work, you can estimate how long it will take to reach that goal. The distance between creating your goal and achieving your goal is the ‘gestation period.’ It is the gap between where you are now and where you want to be. This gestation period cannot be shortened in terms of fetal development, but it can be reduced in terms of transmuting ideas into physical form.
Focus Accelerates Results
You can compress the amount of time it takes to achieve your goal by honing your mental faculties of focus and concentration. When you concentrate on fixed purpose on your goal, you shorten this span of incubation. This is no different from a car traveling from A to B. Put your foot on the gas, and you expend more energy, which propels you towards your destination in less time. When you concentrate, you are sending more mental energy to that which you are focusing on.
Emerson said, ‘The only thing that can grow is the thing that you give energy to.’ So, when you supercharge the energy, you supercharge the growth.
It is thus imperative that you choose carefully what you focus your mind on. Never disperse your efforts across too many things. This dissipates the power of your mental energy and protracts the gestation period for any given idea. This fits in with the maxim ‘A Jack of All Trades Is A Master of None.’ You need to specialize in a particular area and focus your entire mind on that area. Too many people try to do too many different things. As a result, it takes forever to manifest anything worthwhile. This is the reason why most people give up on their dreams. They feel it will never materialize because their lack of focus is extending the transmutation of energy into physical form. Those that focus on one thing at a time blaze a trail to their goal in the fastest time possible.
Leverage the Power of Questions
Your most important goal is your principal definite purpose. Once you have determined what that is you need to ask yourself how I can put more into this goal. What things can I do to make my goal a reality in the shortest time possible? Can I draw leverage from technology, other people’s time, other people’s money, or other people’s knowledge to manifest this goal faster than I ever thought possible?
Guard Against Negative Thoughts
It would help if you guarded against negative thoughts that could impede the growth of your seed. When you focus on an idea with a fixed purpose, it gets turned over to the fertile plains of your subconscious mind. However, just because the seed has been planted does not mean it will manifest. It would be best if you tend to the seed as a farmer tends to his crop.
Nourish Your Ideas
Just like a physical seed needs nutrients, your thought seed needs encouragement. Just like a physical seed needs water and sunlight, your thought seed needs the stimulus of your actions. Just like a farmer uproots weeds that could starve the physical seed, you will want to eradicate the negative paradigms that try to prevent its growth. Feed your seed with single-minded focus, concentrated power, positive visualization, frequent affirmation, and effective time management that sees you working systematically through prioritized tasks in route to your goal.
You need to realize that your goals will materialize when the time is right. Any worthwhile purpose will have a certain gestation period. You sow in one season, and you reap in another season. You never sow and reap in the same season. So, don’t get frustrated if things you seek don’t materialize promptly, realize that they are in route to you, and will be delivered when the time is right.
