What Happened to the Monsters?

By Angi Bair

We live in a world of opposites, good and bad, up and down, men and women, yin and yang, dark and light, morning and night, hot and cold….and the list goes on. Without opposites things have no meaning…we don’t understand up without down, or light without dark. Each part is necessary, and part of the Universal Law of Polarity.

“For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so….righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one” 1 Ne 2:11. Woman was created from man (Adam’s rib) and now all men are created (birthed) from women. They are opposite and connected as one.

Our lives are full of opposites from our genetic makeup and anatomy to our relationships and experiences. Have you ever heard the saying “opposites attract”? That is because they are supposed to. They complete each other. Our experiences are full of opposites that we often define as “good” or “bad”, but they complement and complete each other. Once we learn to recognize the opposites in our experiences we can move forward with faith and hope for what is to come.

In the book “Think and Grow Rich”, Napoleon Hill says, “Every adversity, every failure, and every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit”. Let’s think for a minute of the ultimate opposition in experiences. Christ was crucified on the cross in an extreme and painful manner. This experience could be described as “horrific”, “terrible”, “the worst thing ever”. But from this “negative” experience comes the most beautiful and loving gift to each of us. The opposite of this crucifixion is the Atonement. Jesus gave his life so that we may all be forgiven and cleansed of our sins. What a beautiful and precious gift. Was the road easy to achieve this glorious gift? Would we truly appreciate this gift if it were just given to us without an understanding of the sacrifice it took? Without the Law of Opposition this gift would not have meaning to us and would not be as glorious in our minds as it truly is. Only by understanding the opposite of the gift and the pain and suffering it took to receive the gift, do we truly recognize and see its beauty and splendor. We can truly have gratitude for the gift we have received because we understand its meaning.

This same process happens in everyday life. As bad as things may seem there is always something equally good within that same experience. It may not feel like it, and it may not seem like it, but by law it is there. Often times we have to look for the good in the experience to be able to find it and truly appreciate it. When we seek to find the good, we will see that the blessings and positive things coming from an experience are equal or greater than the negativity we see in the experience.

This reminds me of the movie Monsters Inc. The monsters power their entire city by scaring little kids and collecting the screams. The kids get more conditioned and so the monsters are getting less and less screams. They are facing a power shortage for the city. Eventually the monsters learn that by doing the opposite of scaring little kids they actually get an equal or greater benefit. By making kids laugh and collecting the laughter they find they have a bigger power source and more energy to save the city.

From the kids perspective they are constantly being scared (having negative experiences) until they become conditioned to that and are just blah…then they find the joy and reward in laughing (having a positive experience that is the opposite of the negative experience they had). The result is greater energy, excitement, and happiness in their lives….AND in the lives of all the Monsters whose city has a renewed source of power. From a negative experience are the seeds of an equal or greater experience.

So when life hands you lemons, look for the pitcher and make lemonade. When you find yourself in adversity, failure or heartache, look for the seed of equal and greater benefit in that experience and your life will be filled with happiness and joy.
