Peace with Stand Still

By Colleen Corbett

“Every adversity, every failure, and every heartache carries with it the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit.”

~Napoleon Hill

The more difficult or miserable my circumstance appears, the better it really is. Meaning there lies within it the possibility or seed of something equally wonderful or even better. I say the possibility of something wonderful because we have a choice. We can choose to embrace the “something better” or to ignore it or push it away.  Our choices determine the outcome. If I study my life and look at the bad times and problems I have faced, I can find the good that was contained in my experiences.  Often it is only after the fact that I am able to see the good and feel gratitude for these things. It can be very difficult to appreciate our problems while we are in the middle of them.  This is in part because we are focused on what we perceive as bad. If we search for the good contained in the experience we will eventually find it. Sometimes it’s a seed that needs nurturing.

My husband and I are in the process of building a house. For many reasons this house is very important to us. It is part of a larger goal we are working toward. Because of this it is not surprising that we have encountered a lot of opposition at every step we have taken to accomplish the building of our house.  It has been helpful to recognize the difficulties as opposition and not as a sign that we should give up on the build. Currently the building has been at a stand still for 9 months. Because of new circumstances I am now grateful for the delay that was causing us so much stress before. It has turned out to be a fortunate event, allowing us to make some good changes that wouldn’t have happened otherwise. Now I am looking at the situation as lessons in patience and faith. Because I am dedicated to the process and aware of the laws at work I know we are building the house we want even if it’s not exactly when or how I thought it should happen.
