Well, That Was Not What I Was Expecting

By Laura Curtis

While taking the Mindset Mastery Course and learning about inconsequential goals I realized that I’m not asking for things in my life as often as I can. One day while preparing to facilitate a lesson for Relief Society the following verses stood out to me once again. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; …and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

I thought to myself, I really want a yoke as a visual reminder of His promise to me. I told my husband and he kind of just laughed and asked me what other farm equipment I wanted to display in our home. I told him that this was something that I really wanted. I wrote it down, I visualized it on my wall under one of my favorite pictures of Christ and I had such an overwhelming feeling of love, gratitude and peace.

One day while I was out for a walk, I saw several yokes attached to the side wall of a shed. Just seeing them there made me smile. I knew my yoke was coming. I was tempted to go to antique stores to see if I could find one, but I resisted. I knew it would come in the right way at the right time with no physical help from me.

I waited and wondered curiously how and when I was going to receive my yoke. Weeks went by. I continued to push out doubt and fear. I would hear of others in my class that were having inconsequential goals coming to fruition quickly, sometimes in the same day. I chose to be happy for them and not feel insecure that I was doing this wrong. I had to continue to believe my yoke was coming.

Four weeks from when I set my goal to receive a yoke, I was in Arizona with my mother-in-law helping her clean out her parents’ home after her mother had passed away. I went into their office and on the bookshelf sat a teacup and saucer. I picked it up, prepared to place it in a box for donation when I stopped and really looked at it. I just about fell over. I had been envisioning a full-scale yoke. This yoke was not at all what I was expecting but it was perfect. On the saucer was a picture of a yoke at the top and the bottom. On the right and left side was a picture of a plow with a churn in the center. It was kind of an ugly little saucer, but it was beautiful to me.

Life is not always easy and although our burdens are made light, they are not always taken from us. We need to get through them. We need to plow the ground for those perfect seeds that we are planting to grow, spring forth and bear fruit. This little saucer means the world to me.

I love that I was able to use the Law of Gestation. Every seed has an incubation period. Once the seed is placed in the right environment, it begins to develop and reaches maturity after a certain period of time.

Leslie Householder states, “Remember, all we need is already in the Universe all around us.” I continued to believe, I moved forward in faith, not pulling out my idea seed that it was ridiculous and something that I couldn’t really accept without making it happen myself. My loving Heavenly Father knew that there was a little green and white saucer with a yoke on it that I wanted, and I just needed to be able to be in the right place at the right time to receive it. I love that this is how my goal was answered. I love that it was something from my husband’s grandparents and I love the way it came, in just the right way at the right time for me.
