What do I do?

By Rochelle Lloyd

For years I knew that I needed something more in my life but I didn’t know what. I was a busy mom with 5 kids ranging from ages 9-19. Life was chaotic both inside and outside. James Allen says, “The outer conditions of a person’s life will always be found to be harmoniously related to his inner state…Men do not attract that which they want, but that which they are.” That was certainly true for me.

Our lives seemed to be in constant change. One of those changes was that I realized my kids were getting older and would soon leave our house. Up until and including this point, my purpose in life was to be the best mom I could be. Everything I did was geared towards my kids. However, with this realization I also felt a pull for more. I knew we would need more income to provide for our retirement and future. Beyond that, more of what I didn’t know. It seemed to be something bigger than just that and I was unsettled.

So, what do you do when you don’t know what you should do? Many would say, “Just ask. What do you want? What do you want God to do for you?”. In my case, as a questioner and problem solver, I researched. I researched different employment options which seemed to fit me. I researched what it would take for me to carry out those employment options. Despite having earned a Bachelor’s degree I even went so far as to actually apply for college and become a traditional student again. However, that didn’t feel right. I was looking at the future but still missing my “more” right now. Nothing was coming together and I felt frustrated. I just needed a direction but it seemed that everything I tried became a dead end.

The story of Christ’s first miracle gives some insight. John 2:1-5 reads:

1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.
3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

On the surface there isn’t much there, however with a closer look there are some gems that can help answer the question of what to do when I don’t know what to do. Or rather, what do I want Him to do for me.

I don’t believe for one second that Jesus was being rude to His mother when He said, “woman, what have I to do with thee?”. Instead I believe He was being incredibly respectful and interpret it as , “Ok mom, what do you want me to do. How can I help you? Just ask and I’ll get it done.”. Even though it wasn’t time for Him to proclaim His divine sonship and mission He wanted to help His mother.

She didn’t answer him. She probably didn’t know how to answer him as there were probably things that she couldn’t even fathom, but she knew that He could do something and whatever it was would be miraculous and better than what she could have hoped for. Instead, she told the servants to do whatever He said knowing that would be enough. He proceeded to perform the miracle of turning water to the sweetest of wine.

Sometimes we need to act as best we know and then let the miracles happen. It’s the very act of moving forward with faith that will help us know what we are to do and where we must go. You can’t steer a parked car and God can’t steer us without some movement.

In my case, I know that at some point during the first couple years I was guided to what I needed but I disregarded it—not recognizing it for what it was. It would take another 5 years or so for me to find again, and finally follow, what the Lord had in store for me. It was if I was high centered, spinning my wheels and, periodically, catching a bit of ground but never going anywhere. When I finally decided to “be still” and let God lead the way I got traction. Instead of spinning our wheels, we should learn to be calm and move forward in some direction with faith. Then, with confidence, we can do as Mary did and say for ourselves that, “whatsoever He saith unto you, do it”.
