Whatever we send out will return to us, BY LAW

By Amanda Permann

I have a daughter with Down Syndrome who is an absolute joy. Like anyone else, she has her own unique gifts, talents, and strengths, along with her own desires. She embraces life fully, she is happy, and has a Christ-like soul. In her world, nobody is ever left behind, and she remembers everyone she meets. To her, everyone is a friend, and everyone is family.

When we came down from heaven, we may have forgotten everything—but I feel like she didn’t. It’s as if she still remembers everyone, seeing them as though she’s always known them.

The Law of Cause and Effect states, “Every cause has an effect, and every effect has a cause. Nothing happens by chance.” I see this principle clearly in my daughter’s life. Her loving actions—whether it’s greeting someone warmly, remembering their birthday, or simply showing up with a smile—have a profound effect on those around her. She radiates joy and connection, and the effect is that others feel seen, valued, and loved.

Her participation in life is a testament to this law. In high school, she didn’t just attend; she engaged. She was on the volleyball team, participated as a cheerleader, and supported her siblings at their games, always proudly wearing her school spirit gear. Her cheerful energy and active involvement naturally led to her being elected homecoming queen in her senior year. After graduation, she continued to create positive effects in every area she touched. She joined our church’s Singles Ward and eagerly participated in its activities. She’s had a job for eight years, served an LDS service mission, volunteered at the Deseret Industries, and even performed in our town’s Melodrama.

Each of these experiences is both a cause and an effect. Her decision to fully participate in life has led to new opportunities, connections, and contributions that benefit others. The Law of Cause and Effect reminds us that nothing happens by chance, and her life reflects this truth in powerful ways.

This year for her birthday, we invited everyone to come celebrate with her and enjoy cake and ice cream. We had no idea how many people would show up, but we trusted it would turn out well. In the end, over 90 people came to celebrate with her. She has touched so many lives simply by being kind. She remembers them, and they remember her. It was a beautiful reminder of the positive impact she has on everyone she meets, just by being her authentic, loving self.

One of her most remarkable qualities is how she connects with people. She’s always eager to greet someone, running up to say “hi” with a big smile. She never forgets a birthday, recording them in her iPad and remembering to celebrate each one. Her love for technology helps her stay connected with everyone she cares about. Through these small acts of kindness, she spreads joy and creates a lasting impact on the hearts of those around her.

Her life is a perfect example of how the causes we set in motion—through kindness, love, and participation—create ripples that touch the lives of others. The effect is that her world, and ours, is a little brighter because of the love and connection she brings to it.
