Worthy Wishes and Sunflowers

guest posts overcoming adversity spiritual beliefs Apr 03, 2025

Meet Julie Brown, Mindset Mastery graduate. Julie’s journey through the Mindset Mastery course highlights how trusting in God with faith, and embracing our own sense of value and self-worth can lead to remarkable outcomes and personal growth.

A Sunflower’s Message

Julie’s Phase 1 experiment began with a simple yet heartfelt desire: to see a sunflower. Despite not having seen any around town earlier in the summer, she remained focused on her goal, and by the end of the week, a solitary sunflower appeared in the empty lot next to her house, facing her bedroom window.

Julie remarked,

“The next week sunflowers were everywhere in their bunches, but that one solitary sunflower grew just for me.”

This experience illustrates a powerful principle: when we align our thoughts, intentions, and prayers with God’s will, even our smallest desires are noticed and acknowledged. God is attentive to the details of our lives and responds to the sincere desires of our hearts. The appearance of that solitary sunflower, followed by an abundance of them in the weeks to come, serves as a gentle reminder that God is always listening and orchestrating events in our lives, even in the smallest of ways. There truly are no desires that are too small for God to notice, and His timing and ways are always perfect.

Julie’s Phase 2 Goal: Trusting God in the Details

For her Phase 2 goal, Julie set her sights on getting an iPad with a keyboard to help her teach seminary effectively. With her daughter’s wedding approaching, Julie and her husband had been very careful to not spend money on “extras”, so the iPad and keyboard felt like quite a stretch. Julie’s husband, a banker who carefully managed their finances, was kind and supportive, but Julie felt apprehensive about asking for something extra.

Reflecting on the experience, Julie said,

“I know this may seem silly, and honestly, I was hoping it would come from somewhere else, but the peace I felt in that situation was wonderful. Money usually isn’t the best topic I like to bring up.”

She knew the iPad would be a valuable tool for organizing her resources and lessons, especially after being hired as a substitute seminary teacher. However, the thought of asking her husband for money before the wedding made her uneasy. Julie had faith that the need would be met, but was unsure how it would happen. As her deadline approached, she felt a deep sense of peace and decided to ask her husband. To her relief, he was incredibly supportive, and she received the iPad before her deadline.

Confronting Fear and Breaking Through

One of Julie’s biggest fears was asking her husband for money. She stated:

“My fear was asking my husband for money when I didn’t think it would be feasible. It wasn’t as difficult as I had worked it up to be. I had had a bad experience in the past when we were in a financial situation and didn’t want to broach the subject. When I pray in faith and feel good about my goal, and it’s a worthy goal, Heavenly Father provides a way.”

Although past experiences had made her wary of broaching the topic, through prayer and faith, she found the courage to do so.

This experience demonstrates Julie’s willingness to trust God to provide, even in situations where it might feel uncomfortable to ask for help, and highlights the importance of overcoming this discomfort. When we allow ourselves to ask for help, we open the door for others to support us and for God to work through them to meet our needs. I often discuss the need to rely on our Unseen help, but we must also remember that sometimes we may need help from those we CAN see. It’s a reminder that we don’t have to carry our burdens alone, and that expressing our needs can strengthen relationships and foster deeper trust. Julie found that when she acted on the peaceful prompting she felt, her husband responded with kindness and support, reinforcing the idea that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but a step toward collaboration and mutual growth.

She realized that when her goals are worthy and aligned with God’s will, He provides a way. This breakthrough wasn’t just about the iPad—it was about overcoming her internal barriers and realizing that she, too, was worthy of asking and receiving.

Julie also shared that just beginning her Phase 1 goal was a significant breakthrough.

“I have had a struggle feeling worthy to ask and receive. Like everyone else can do it, but it’s not for me. I know it wasn’t a big thing, but to align my subconscious with my conscious has been a great learning experience throughout this course.”

Julie isn’t alone in her struggles to feel worthy of receiving; however, the feeling of worthiness is not a step that can be skipped over in goal achievement. It aligns our mindset with the belief that we deserve the blessings and opportunities we seek. When we don’t feel worthy, we may unconsciously sabotage our efforts, doubt our ability to achieve our goals, or hesitate to take the necessary steps forward. This sense of unworthiness creates a barrier that can block the flow of blessings and hinder our progress.

In contrast, as we seek for and cultivate a sense of worthiness, we open ourselves up to receiving God’s blessings fully. It allows us to embrace opportunities, ask for what we need, and accept help from others without guilt or hesitation. This mindset shift is essential, because it helps us to recognize that our goals and desires are valid and that we are deserving of the success and joy they bring.

Feeling worthy also reflects our trust in God’s plan for us. It acknowledges that He wants us to experience joy and fulfillment, and that by achieving our goals, we are living up to the potential He has placed within us. When we see ourselves as worthy, we align our actions with our faith, allowing us to move forward with confidence and purpose. This inner alignment between our hearts and minds is key to creating the outcomes we desire, as it harmonizes our thoughts, beliefs, and actions in the pursuit of our goals.

A Message of Encouragement

To anyone facing their fears, Julie offers this advice:

“Go for it! What you want—wants you. God wants what is best to bring joy to yourself and others.”

Her journey illustrates that our deepest desires are often aligned with God’s plan for us. By taking steps forward and trusting in our worth, we invite extraordinary outcomes. Her story encourages us to believe in the validity of our desires, trust in our own worthiness, and have confidence that God’s plan will bring about beautiful results. Her journey is a testament to the transformative power of aligning our efforts with faith and trusting that, with God’s guidance, our dreams can indeed come true.
