When Things Look Bleak

law of rhythm leslie householder’s posts overcoming adversity spiritual beliefs Apr 28, 2019

I was in a slump. On the verge of exciting breakthroughs, yet suddenly overwhelmed by new waves of doubt.

I had set some big goals, and as the deadline approached, everything looked bleak—just like the feeling in the photo above. It took all my energy to push aside the nagging thoughts that maybe, just maybe, the changes I wanted weren’t possible after all.

For days, my mind swirled with questions:
"What if it doesn’t work out?"
"What if I miss my goals?"
"What if the resources I need don’t come through?"

Each time an anxious thought crept in, I rejected it. But rejecting it wasn’t enough to replace it with the unshakable faith I needed.

I was losing sight of my objectives and felt weak in applying the very principles of prosperity I teach.

"Oh, give yourself a break, Leslie. You’re just pregnant."

Yes, I knew hormones were at play, but I also knew something deeper was happening. I’ve learned to trust in God’s mercy—especially when I’m struggling. I believe He blesses us even when we’re not perfect (thank heavens for that). And because I choose to believe in His goodness rather than the all-too-common “I’m not worthy” mentality, I’ve seen firsthand how He’s able to send blessings—by law.

Still, my hope was fading. And when hope fades, it’s easy to want to give up.

So I turned to two of my closest friends—people I trust to help me reset my thinking. Because deep down, I knew it wasn’t my circumstances that needed to change. It was my mindset.

A Shift in Perspective

Marnie’s advice:
"Dig into gratitude for what you have and what you know is coming. Depression isn’t always a bad thing—it makes you willing to change, helps you see contrast. And don’t forget the law of rhythm: something great is around the corner. Refocus spiritually. Doctrine and Covenants 6:33-37 really helped me through [a similar slump]."

(That scripture says: “Therefore, fear not, little flock; do good; let earth and hell combine against you, for if ye are built upon my rock, they cannot prevail... Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not.”)

Trevan’s comment:
"God hasn’t brought us this far to fail now."

That hit me like a ton of bricks.

I thought back to all the miracles we’d experienced. The times when, against all odds, things worked out. And I realized how absurd it was to believe He would bring us this far, only to abandon us now.

Suddenly, the struggle felt like wasted energy. I wasn’t in the struggle anymore—I had stepped outside of it.

Taking Action

I found a quiet place and took Marnie’s advice. I focused on gratitude—not just as a nice idea, but as a deliberate action step to shift my energy. I reflected on everything I had to be grateful for until I felt it to my core.

And you know what? It worked.

Because I understand the laws of success, I knew that taking time to truly feel gratitude—even to the point of tears—wasn’t just a mental exercise. It was an act of alignment. It prepared me to receive the blessings that had been waiting for me all along.

Positive Thinking Tip:

When life feels overwhelming, don’t just think about gratitude—immerse yourself in it. Gratitude isn’t passive; it’s a powerful tool to realign your thoughts, your energy, and your ability to receive.

No matter how much we learn about these principles, we’ll always be challenged to exercise them. And just like muscles, if we don’t use them, they weaken.

But the good news?

We can shape our lives into anything we want them to be.

The only thing that truly needs fixing when life looks bleak is our thinking.

Fix your thoughts, and everything else falls into place.
