The Wind that Keeps You Soaring
Jan 01, 2008
After being out of town for a month, finally catching up on laundry, and cleaning out the trailer (just a few highlights from my recent whirlwind), I finally have a quiet moment to turn some attention to articles.
Well… I’m just going to start rambling—so let’s see what comes out! It’s after midnight (which is why it’s finally quiet), and technically, I probably should be asleep… so this could get interesting.
But let’s talk about the Law of Relativity!
Whether we realize it or not, the Law of Relativity is something we live by every single day. When used correctly, it elevates our quality of life. When misunderstood or ignored (which is the default for most of us), life can feel unnecessarily hard.
Here’s the basic idea: life circumstances, experiences, and situations are neither inherently good nor bad. Just like the truth that “Energy IS,” every life experience we have also “just IS.”
Let me explain.
Our minds have three main components:
-
The conscious mind (our “aware” mind),
-
The subconscious mind (which handles life-sustaining functions automatically),
-
And the body (the “tool” of the mind).
As we gather data through our five physical senses, that data comes in with no built-in meaning. It’s our conscious mind that decides what the data means—whether it’s good or bad—based on the “programs” running quietly in the background of our subconscious.
Take this example: you receive a $4,000 income check in the mail.
That number—$4,000—just IS.
It simply is – what – it – is.
Now, for someone who’s used to receiving $1,500 checks, this $4,000 feels amazing!
But for someone accustomed to receiving $22,000 checks, $4,000 might feel like a disaster.
The truth? The check is just $4,000.
Without conscious intervention, someone might label it as bad, start feeling bad, and—by law—move into a negative vibration. In that state, they cut themselves off from their personal access to divine guidance: the instinctive part of them that could actually lead them to the solution.
To keep that divine connection open, they need to remember: the $4,000 isn’t good or bad—it just IS. They have a God-given ability to consciously assign it a positive meaning. And when they do—when they choose to feel grateful for it, even if it wasn’t what they hoped for—their body moves into a positive vibration, and doors begin to open.
So how does it happen?
When they choose a grateful and hopeful state, not only do they maintain that open connection with God, but they also begin to align with the very resources that can help them move forward. Maybe a certain person enters their life. Maybe a new idea sparks. Maybe a string of events starts falling into place. The opportunities come—but only when they stay in a state of positive expectancy.
(Translation: people are drawn to that kind of energy. The right help, from the right people, at just the right time.)
And understanding the Law of Relativity makes this possible.
Here’s why:
Whatever life hands you, know this: it just IS. It’s not good or bad until you compare it to something else. If life feels like it’s been beating you down, it may be because you’ve been measuring it against what you think it should have been instead.
You've decided what happened should not have happened.
But what if the truth is… what happened is perfect?
Not in the comfortable, easy sense. But in the “there’s a gift here if I can find it” kind of way.
Life unfolds as it does through a mixture of natural law, your thoughts and actions, and divine design. Every hardship carries within it a “seed of equal or greater benefit,” as promised by Napoleon Hill—if you’re willing to dig for it.
What IS, is perfect.
The disappointment, the burden, the heartache—yes, even that—is perfect. It’s a gift.
Because without that hardship, the benefit attached to it (which does exist, by law) could never become yours.
And if we fail to find that treasure inside the hardship? We get to repeat the challenge—over and over—until we do. That repetition? It’s not punishment. It’s grace. You can choose to see it either way.
James Allen put it beautifully in As a Man Thinketh:
“When a man completely and genuinely alters his thoughts about his [problem], and discovers the true perspective that God intends for him to adopt, the [problem] will, ‘become so out of harmony with his mentality that it falls out of his life as a garment is cast aside, and, with the growth of opportunities, which fit the scope of his expanding powers, he passes out of it forever.’”
So… how do we change the way we feel about our problems?
How can we possibly assign a positive meaning to something that feels intolerable?
Use the Law of Relativity.
Think about how it could be worse.
Find the silver linings.
Generate feelings of gratitude.
Stop using the Law against yourself by comparing your life to those who appear happier. Instead, use the Law in your favor. Compare your current circumstances to how things used to be—or how much worse they could be.
There is so much to be grateful for. And gratitude? It never goes unrewarded.
Here’s a true story to drive this home:
Success Magazine once featured one of the wealthiest men in the country. It said:
“Not everything has gone his way, of course. In the early 1990s, for example, [he] struggled to stay in business during a deep slump in the commercial real estate market. Unable to make payments on $9.2 billion in debt, he writes… that a low point came when he passed a beggar on the street and realized the beggar ‘was worth $9.2 billion more than [him].’”
Let that sink in:
At his lowest point, this man was worth $9.2 billion LESS than a beggar.
In that moment, he used the Law of Relativity against himself.
But then he made a shift. The article goes on to say:
“[He] recovered by concentrating on how to revive his business, and not panicking over its problems. ‘I focused on the solution, not the problems. I was steadfast in my positive approach. Sure I had a lot of big problems, but I regained my focus and just kept working at it, knowing it would work out.’”
That same man turned a negative $9.2 billion net worth into billions in positive net worth—all through disciplined thoughts and actions.
(Law of Polarity, anyone?)
He who thinks he has it the hardest—financially or otherwise—has the greatest opportunity for joy and success… but only if he’s willing to reprogram the way he sees the world. It requires humility, a childlike willingness to learn, and the courage to believe that maybe, just maybe, God’s way of thinking really is better.
And if life hasn’t improved after making a few changes? Or if peace and fulfillment still feel out of reach? That’s a clue: the thought-shifting process isn’t done yet.
Too often, people refuse to believe that their thinking could be completely off. And even if they do believe it, many lack the resolve to uncover the truth—which is a journey that can be uncomfortable, but also incredibly joyful.
But those who stick with the process until the end will experience a freedom and peace they never imagined possible.
So, how can you tell if your thinking needs adjustment?
If you’re unhappy, there’s a shift waiting to happen.
You might be thinking, “No, he’s unhappy because he needs to behave differently.” But the truth is, all behavior begins with thought. If we want lasting change in our actions, we have to begin with thought transformation.
Even our unhappiness is a gift—an internal alarm nudging us to keep searching until we find real joy. And when we find it? It’s the kind of happiness that doesn’t waver. If we haven’t found it yet, it means the search isn’t over.
Every goal, every desire, every dream we chase ultimately has one purpose: to feel happy.
Here’s a powerful truth that many will miss, even when it’s spelled out:
When we stop waiting for circumstances to make us happy—and instead, find peace and happiness exactly as things are—that’s when circumstances begin to change.
But be careful: don’t try to feel happy just to manipulate your circumstances. That won’t work. The intention behind your happiness matters. It will either trap you or free you.
If you’re willing to be happy without requiring any external changes, then—true to the promise “seek and ye shall find”—God will guide you to what comes next. You’ll get nudges, thoughts, promptings. And if you follow them, they’ll lead you.
It’s your personal internal guidance system—what members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints call the Light of Christ.
Happiness is a natural byproduct of lawful living—and by “lawful,” I mean living according to God’s laws. Not just the 7 Laws of Success I talk about in Hidden Treasures, but also the 10 Commandments and more.
God’s laws aren’t restrictive—they’re freeing.
A kite might look like it’s being held back by the string, but in truth, the string is what keeps it in the air. Without it, the kite would crash.
The same is true for the laws of God.
