Have you ever wanted to become a public speaker? Getting to the point where you feel comfortable and excited about being in front of a group can be a process.

As it is with any goal. Once the idea is conceived and the process starts, it takes a fixed period of time to be realized. As with pregnancy, in which it takes nine months for the child to be born. The nine months is called the gestation period. Our goals and dreams also have a finite gestation period, so let's talk a little bit about the Law of Gestation.

When we want to accomplish something in life, the Law of Gestation plays an important part. The thing you want to accomplish starts with an idea, like an egg. But the idea just isn't enough. How many times have you thought of an idea and some time later someone else has brought it to life. That person took the "egg" idea and then proceeded to "impregnate" it with action. The problem with most ideas is that we aren't always aware of the gestation period for ideas. Some ideas take a matter of months to be complete, while others can take years.

It's important to remember the Law of Gestation especially when your goals aren't achieved as quickly as you hoped. Just remember that it is still in process, and as long as you don't cancel the process by giving up, it's continuing to develop, and at the right time, it will be realized.

In regards to public speaking, the gestation period for becoming successful is different for everyone. My gestation period will be different than it is for others. It wasn't until my desire was strong enough and I was emotionally invested enough that the real growth began. I always felt it would just happen, but that wasn't enough. Once I finally got serious, the gestation period to achieve the level of expertise I was after took five years.
