Perfectionism and Prosperity

We live in a time when life moves faster than ever before. Stress, overload, and overwhelm are constant battles. Under this pressure, it’s difficult to stay calm—the very mindset needed to live in harmony with the universal laws of success. Too often, we get discouraged and lose faith simply because we spend so much time criticizing ourselves for our imperfections.

But to qualify for the blessings we’re praying for, we need a calm and confident state of mind. And yet, when we’re disappointed in ourselves, faith becomes difficult. The problem? As long as we’re not perfect, there will always be something to feel inadequate about. So how do we find peace of mind despite our imperfections? How can we achieve prosperity when we inevitably fall short?

Do we have to THINK, BEHAVE, and DO everything perfectly for the blessings to come? No.

In my book, Hidden Treasures: Heaven’s Astonishing Help with Money Matters, I share how I wrestled with a perfectionist mindset for years. After I married and had children, I quickly realized how utterly impossible perfection was—even when giving it my all.

For instance, I’d commit to studying a set amount each day, only to have a baby wake up crying the moment I sat down to read. Or I’d finally get the kids to bed, open my books, and—just then—someone would throw up. No matter how hard I tried, something always got in the way. Before having a family, I prided myself on self-mastery, but that illusion crumbled with the arrival of my first child. Suddenly, my time was no longer my own, despite my best efforts to maintain structure and discipline.

Eventually, I hit a breaking point. I felt like a failure—cranky, sloppy, and incapable of finishing anything I started. Everything I did felt half-done. In tears, I confessed to God that I was doing the best I could, but it still wasn’t enough.

For the first time in years, I felt Him smiling down at me. It was as if He was saying, Finally, you understand your dependence on Me! Now we can move forward.

That moment changed everything. And even now, with more responsibilities than ever (I just got hit in the head by a paper airplane—no joke), interruptions still rule my life. I rarely have the time to prepare and execute things as perfectly or professionally as I’d like.

Let’s say I’m selling something, and my presentation goes terribly. I have two choices: I can either think, Oh no, that was awful, or I can say, That’s just going to have to be good enough.

Which mentality leads to success? Which mindset opens the door to prosperity?

I now understand that my best will never be "good enough"—and that’s okay. Because God knows my limitations and makes up the difference when I sincerely try. When I mess up, I turn to Him, trusting that He can transform my imperfect efforts into something meaningful.

And time and time again, I’ve seen miracles.

So, do we have to THINK, BEHAVE, and DO everything perfectly to receive blessings? No. Perfection is unattainable. But when we fall short, we can turn to God, pray for mercy, and trust in His grace.

Let me share an example. Years ago, my husband and I made the mistake of trying to purchase multiple investment properties at once. As the underwriters realized what we were doing, they became hesitant. The first home closed relatively smoothly, but the second became a nightmare. Every time we met one requirement, they threw another at us.

Originally, they asked for a specific amount in reserves. Then, fearing we were a risky investment, they doubled that amount, then tripled it, then required proof the funds had been sitting in our account for months. At some point, it became clear they didn’t want to approve the loan—they were just waiting for us to give up.

After jumping through every possible hoop, we finally hit a wall. The next demand was impossible to meet. Exhausted and discouraged, we were ready to let it go. Then, a simple thought came to mind:

We don’t need to come up with more money. We just need one person in underwriting to have a change of heart.

Suddenly, the solution seemed simple. It was far easier to pray for one person’s perspective to shift than to magically produce a large sum of money overnight.

So, with peace in our hearts, we emailed them, saying we would not be providing the additional proof they requested.

The next day, our loan officer called. There was only one final, insignificant request—nothing like the demands from before. The loan was approved. The impossible requirement had simply… disappeared.

The point? “You need not run faster than you have strength.”

Perfection is always impossible. But when we trust in God, He makes up the difference. Ask for what is in your highest good, then trust Him with the outcome. (More on that...)

A woman once prayed:

"Dear Father, I’ve done really well today. I haven’t yelled at the kids, cussed, lost my temper, overeaten, overspent, or neglected my responsibilities. I haven’t watched too much TV or driven too fast. I’ve been kind and cheerful to everyone…

But Father, it’s morning, and I haven’t gotten out of bed yet. From here, I’m really going to need Your help.”

That’s what it comes down to—reliance on a higher power. If you choose to believe that God bridges the gap between your efforts and what’s required, that very belief puts you in the right state of mind to receive the blessing… even when you don’t “deserve” it.

Because in truth, none of us deserve it. We are only here by His grace.

So, what does He require? Belief. Belief that He can make up for our failings. Belief enough to ask Him for help.

Believe that you can achieve your ideal life. Do what you can, and when necessary, remind yourself: This is just going to have to be good enough.

Can you see how this thinking aligns with the laws of success? If we constantly believe we’re falling short, we block our own progress. But if we trust in God to fill the gaps, we open the door to blessings.

I just got hit in the head again. I’ve tried editing this piece as I’ve gone along, but now that I’m at the end, I really should go back through to fine-tune it.

But a sweet little five-year-old has been waiting for my attention for over two hours, so…

It’s just going to have to be good enough.
