“Do it unto the Least of These”

“To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” (Newton’s Third Law) This means that whatever energy we put out will come back at us from an opposing direction.  If we are continually negative, then negative will come back at us from someone, something, somewhere, outside of us. My husband constantly tells our children about the “Golden Rule”, “Do unto others as you would have them do to you.” How do we apply this into our lives to get the greatest benefit?

Trusting in the Law of Cause and Effect, we can live in such a way that we know that how we think, feel, and whatever we do will come back to us in some way or another.  My son had a constant thought that would come into his mind whenever he fell or got hurt.  He would say to me, “I always get hurt.”  He put out the belief that he always got hurt, so he got hurt a lot.  I made an effort to bring up moments when he wasn’t hurt and tell him, “See you don’t always get hurt.” He began to see this pattern and changed his thought process, now he tells me, “I hardly get hurt anymore.” He put out an energy with his thoughts and it came back at him.

Years ago, we felt led to have my husband quit a very good job with no backup plan.  We knew we would learn from this experience, we just didn’t realize how much we would learn.  We were extremely tight on money and it was difficult for my husband to find other employment.  We had $20 to our name and one of my daughters needed a pair of shoes for church, as she had been wearing tennis shoes to church. As we were walking into the store I saw a family with very little in their shopping cart, they were obviously struggling financially, but so were we.  Thankfully, we had some food storage, so spending $20 on shoes didn’t seem like a big deal at the time.

Walking past that family, I felt prompted to give them our last $20, but I didn’t want to offend them, so I continued walking.  I spoke to my husband and asked him what he thought.  He told me that I should do anything I felt prompted to do. I began walking around the store, trying to find the family, hoping I didn’t miss my opportunity.  I felt led to go to the front of the store.  I saw them paying and starting to leave.  The whole time searching through the store I wondered what I would say to them.  When I walked up to the husband, the words came so clearly to my mind.  I handed him the $20 and told him, “God wanted him to know that He was watching over his family and taking care of them.” He said thank you and I walked away.  I felt so good, trusting that everything would be fine, and knowing that if God was caring and watching over this man’s family, He was watching over me.  A few weeks later, we were at a meeting and a man walked up to us and gave us a check for $4,000.

35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:  36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.  37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?  38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. (Matthew 25:35-40)

Sometimes the effect of our thoughts, feelings, and actions comes back to us like a transaction between one person to another, other times God takes care of the transaction.  There is always an effect to the cause, it is a law.   I wasn’t looking to get anything in return from God for helping this family, I was just doing what I felt led to do and He blessed me more than I thought possible.
